Libby Grisé

December 7, 2016

Libby's been my student for over a year now and it has been so much fun to watch her in action.  She's the kind of person who responds to a single project with a multitude of ideas, often I see seeds on her contact sheets that could be grown into full-fledged projects in their own rite.  Anyhow, I couldn't figure out which of her projects to show, so I put up 2.

The first set is from her haunted series; it's one of my favorites of all her projects.  Libby drives around looking for abandoned houses to shoot.  So.  That is what she did.  She found a number of cool dilapidated structures around Oregon and shot photos of the spaces.  She then went online and got antique photos of people.  She printed those out and made negatives of them by contacting them in the darkroom.  She then used the negatives generated by that process by re-contacting them during print making, yielding these ghostly forms within the spaces.

Most of the little forms have textures and shapes some of the textures and shades are from where the faces and clothing printed out, but many of them also show the fibers of paper itself.  This ended up giving the little ghost people interesting -in some cases, mildly cosmological- textures.  In all, I just found them so beautiful!

The other photos here are from her "Liquids" project.  To me, they seem like a really genuine glimpse into childhood.
